We are working with a successful and award-winning commercial landscape construction and maintenance contractor to recruit a SHEQ Manager. This is a great opportunity to join a well-established business known for delivering high-quality hard and soft landscaping schemes, ongoing maintenance services and, with specialist partners, specialist features including irrigation systems and water features across ground-level, podium and roof-terrace environments.

With more than 300 employees, annual turnover exceeding £40 million and projects ranging from approximately £100,000 to more than £10 million, this is a substantial business offering plenty of variety. You will have the opportunity to work across projects throughout London and the South of England and make a genuine contribution across Safety, Health, Environmental and Quality matters.

Applications are welcomed from experienced SHEQ Managers, HSEQ Managers, Construction SHEQ Managers and Health and Safety Managers who have practical environmental, quality and integrated management-system experience.

Reporting to the Managing Director, you will be the person colleagues turn to for practical, knowledgeable SHEQ advice and support. You will lead and maintain the company’s SHEQ arrangements across the full project lifecycle and line manage and develop a SHE Apprentice.

What you will be doing

• Act as the company’s competent Health & Safety adviser, providing practical guidance on UK legislation, HSE guidance and construction industry good practice.
• Review, maintain and continually improve SHEQ policies, procedures, RAMS frameworks and inspection systems.
• Plan and undertake inspections and audits across projects and maintenance operations, investigate incidents and ensure findings and corrective actions are completed.
• Provide SHEQ input from tender and pre-construction through mobilisation, construction, handover and ongoing maintenance.
• Advise on CDM 2015 duties and Principal Contractor arrangements and support contractor and supplier competence assurance.
• Undertake Appointed Person or Temporary Works Coordinator duties only where separately and formally appointed and competent.
• Maintain and continually improve the Integrated Management System and arrangements supporting ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.
• Coordinate internal and external audits, surveillance and recertification, including evidence requirements and non-conformity close-out.
• Maintain environmental, sustainability and quality arrangements and administer Constructionline and other compliance or pre-qualification portals.
• Maintain training, competency and CPD records, deliver company-wide SHEQ training and support higher-risk activity authorisations.
• Line manage and mentor the SHE Apprentice, providing structured development, coaching, supervised experience and staged competency support.
• Raise non-conformities, require corrective action and stop any activity presenting an immediate or serious risk.

Location and travel

The office is near Slough. The role requires regular travel to project sites across London and the South of England, with business travel expenses paid.

Requirements

Essential requirements

• Strong operational Health & Safety experience gained within landscaping or building construction, together with practical experience of wider SHEQ systems.
• Strong knowledge of UK Health & Safety legislation, including CDM 2015 and the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.
• Practical working knowledge of ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 and their application within an Integrated Management System, including audits, evidence and corrective action.
• Experience developing and critically reviewing RAMS, procedures and management-system documentation.
• Practical understanding of COSHH, PUWER, LOLER, working at height and other relevant construction legislation.
• Experience managing or supporting certification, accreditation, pre-qualification requirements or external compliance portals.
• Experience maintaining training and competence records, delivering SHEQ training and coaching or mentoring less-experienced SHEQ personnel.
• A relevant occupational Health & Safety qualification, supported by ongoing continuing professional development.
• The confidence to work with Directors, operational managers, clients, employees, contractors and suppliers, challenge non-compliance constructively and provide practical solutions.
• A full UK driving licence and willingness to travel regularly to project sites across London and the South of England.

• Direct experience within commercial landscaping or landscape construction.
• Previous responsibility for external ISO audits, surveillance or recertification.
• Experience maintaining Constructionline or similar compliance and pre-qualification portals.
• Lead Auditor training or relevant professional membership.
• Appointed Person or Temporary Works Coordinator competence or experience.
• Strategic environmental, sustainability or CSR experience.
• Working knowledge of the Building Safety Act 2022, National Highway Sector Schemes or streetworks.

Benefits

Package and working pattern

• Salary of £55,000 - £65,000, dependent on experience.
• 25 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays.
• Full-time, permanent position.
• Hybrid working, with a minimum of one day each week at the office near Slough.
