Developer Advocate

  • Location: Remote within the UK, with a preference for someone in or around London
  • Salary: £45,000–£65,000 per year, depending on experience
  • Reporting to: Joseph Ward, CEO and co-founder

The role

At Aventail, formerly LocAi, we’re building local AI tooling for developers and technically curious people. We’re looking for a Developer Advocate to help people discover the product, get started successfully and find lasting value in using it.

You’ll combine practical technical experience with clear communication. You’ll participate in AI and developer communities, grow our GitHub community, create tutorials and videos, and bring user feedback into product development.

This is a junior role, working directly with Joseph. He’ll set priorities, give you product context and review your work as you develop. You should already have the technical and communication basics to get started, work through agreed tasks independently and ask for input when you need it.

Responsibilities

Build community relationships

  • Participate in local AI and LLM subreddits, GitHub, developer forums and our public Slack community through useful answers, examples and discussions.
  • Build relationships with developers, local AI enthusiasts and less technical people exploring AI.
  • Introduce Aventail where relevant, respecting community norms and helping interested users get started.
  • Help maintain our GitHub presence through clear examples, documentation, discussions, responsive issue engagement and contribution opportunities.

Create practical technical content

  • Produce tutorials, videos, walkthroughs and working examples that help people accomplish real tasks with Aventail.
  • Explain setup, model choices and common problems clearly, working with Joseph and our developers when you need deeper product or technical input.
  • Own content from idea through distribution and keep it accurate as the product develops.

Help users succeed and inform the product

  • Help people move from initial interest to successful use of Aventail for a real use case.
  • Identify onboarding difficulties and recurring problems, then create resources or propose improvements.
  • Turn community conversations and user experiences into feedback on unmet needs, usability and priorities.
  • Follow up with users to understand what drives continued use and what prevents it.

Develop and improve our approach

  • Learn from how other local AI tools support their communities and suggest relevant audiences, topics, channels and collaborations to explore.
  • Run focused experiments and review results with Joseph.
  • Track which activities lead to successful onboarding and continued usage, using the findings to guide next steps.

Experience and skills

We’d typically expect around a year of relevant experience in software development, developer advocacy, technical education, technical content or community work. That’s a guide, rather than a fixed requirement. Independent projects and open-source work also count.

Must haves

  • Practical technical ability. You can install and configure software, work with APIs, write or adapt code examples and troubleshoot problems. You can learn Aventail well enough to give credible demonstrations and help users solve problems.
  • Open source work you can show and explain. You’ve built or helped maintain an open-source project on GitHub over a period of time. You can explain your contribution, how it works, how you documented it and what you learned. It need not have a large user base, many stars or commercial success.
  • Familiarity with GitHub and open source. You understand repositories, issues, discussions, pull requests, contribution workflows and licensing, and can make a project approachable for users and contributors.
  • Clear communication in writing and on camera. You can explain technical ideas clearly and have an existing video showing you on camera delivering a tutorial, demo or walkthrough. A personal project is fine. We’re interested in how you explain the subject, alongside examples of your writing or documentation.
  • Confidence in developer communities. You understand how developer communities work, know where people discuss AI tools and can join conversations helpfully. You’re comfortable answering questions, finding out what users need and introducing a relevant tool without making every conversation a sales pitch.
  • Hands on experience with local LLMs. You’ve run models locally, explored relevant tools and worked through practical setup or usage problems. You can explain what you tried, what worked and where you needed to investigate further.
  • Initiative and openness to feedback. You can deliver agreed work, share progress and ask sensible questions. Our team gives clear, direct feedback. You should be comfortable discussing your work openly, giving feedback yourself and making changes without losing momentum.

You don’t need to have held a Developer Advocate title. Show us what you’ve built, maintained, explained or contributed to.

Nice to haves

  • Previous developer advocacy, tutorials or community work in AI infrastructure or local AI tooling.
  • Deeper knowledge of inference, tokens, context windows, quantisation and different model types.
  • Experience assessing RAM, VRAM and other hardware requirements, and explaining the trade-offs to users.
  • Experience planning community activity, distributing technical content or improving adoption through small experiments.

What success looks like

Over your first six months, we want to see growing developer engagement and more people finding lasting value in Aventail. That includes useful tutorials and documentation, active community conversations, successful onboarding and feedback that helps us improve the product.

We’ll look at activity on our GitHub, including how often people pull and use the project, along with active product usage, continued use and the quality of community feedback. Joseph will agree priorities with you and help refine the approach as we learn what works.

What you can expect

  • A salary of £45,000–£65,000 per year, depending on experience. We can discuss a higher salary for particularly relevant experience in local AI or AI infrastructure advocacy.
  • Remote working within the UK. We’re planning to bring the team together around King’s Cross in early 2027, so being nearby would be helpful, but the role is open to people elsewhere in the UK. We’d like to discuss occasional team meetups in London.
  • Direct collaboration with Joseph, with clear priorities, regular feedback and support to develop in the role.
  • Ownership of agreed work and the opportunity to suggest improvements as you learn the product and community.
  • Scope to experiment and develop your technical and communication skills.

How to apply

Send your CV or profile with a GitHub project you’ve built or helped maintain and a technical video showing you on camera. Briefly explain your contribution to the project and what the video helps its audience understand. Include any useful tutorials, documentation or community contributions too.

Also tell us which AI communities you participate in and about a model, tool or workflow you’ve explored recently.

The GitHub project and the video are the first things we look at, so please make sure we can open both links. If one is missing or we can’t open it, we’ll ask you for it before going any further.
