Senior Moodle Developer

Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior Moodle Developer to support, maintain, and enhance an existing Moodle-based Learning Management System.

The selected candidate will be responsible for production support, new feature development, platform administration, integrations, and migrating the current Moodle platform to the latest stable version. This client-facing role requires strong technical capability, ownership, and excellent communication skills.

Key Responsibilities

• Support, monitor, and maintain the existing Moodle LMS platform.
• Investigate and resolve production issues within agreed service levels.
• Develop new features, custom plugins, themes, reports, and platform enhancements.
• Analyze the existing Moodle implementation and identify technical risks, compatibility issues, and improvement opportunities.
• Plan and execute the migration of Moodle to the latest stable supported version.
• Assess the compatibility of plugins, themes, integrations, and custom code before migration.
• Perform data migration, upgrade testing, regression testing, and post-migration validation.
• Integrate Moodle with third-party applications through APIs, web services, SSO, and authentication mechanisms.
• Monitor and improve application performance, security, scalability and availability.
• Manage Moodle configuration, scheduled tasks, roles, permissions, courses and user access.
• Prepare and maintain technical documentation, deployment procedures, support guides and migration plans.
• Work closely with client stakeholders, functional teams, QA engineers and infrastructure teams.
• Provide regular progress updates and communicate risks, dependencies, and technical recommendations clearly.
• Participate in code reviews and follow secure development and version-control practices.
• Take ownership of assigned activities and contribute proactively to the overall improvement of the platform.

Requirements

Mandatory Technical Skills

• Strong hands-on experience in Moodle development (Version 4.5+), customization, and administration.
• Strong hands-on experience in PHP (version 8.1+) and object-oriented programming.
• Experience developing and maintaining Moodle plugins, themes, blocks, and reports.
• Experience with Moodle version upgrades and migration activities.
• Strong knowledge of MySQL or MariaDB.
• Experience with HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, AJAX and responsive web development.
• Experience with Moodle APIs, web services and third-party integrations.
• Working knowledge of Linux, Apache or Nginx and scheduled jobs.
• Experience using Git and following structured deployment practices.
• Strong debugging, performance-tuning, and root-cause-analysis skills.
• Understanding of application security, access control, authentication, and data privacy.
• Experience supporting production applications and handling incidents.
• Experience in AI-assisted development using Cursor or Claude.

Preferred Skills

• Experience with Moodle Workplace or enterprise-scale LMS implementations.
• Experience in front-end technologies like Angular and React is a plus.
• Experience with SSO technologies such as SAML, OAuth2, or LDAP.
• Experience integrating Moodle with HRMS, CRM, content or reporting platforms.
• Knowledge of Docker, CI/CD pipelines and cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure.
• Understanding of accessibility standards and secure coding practices.
• Experience in the education, training, or EdTech domain.
• Moodle certifications or relevant PHP, cloud, or DevOps certifications.

Educational Qualification

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related discipline.
