Developer – Applications & Data
Posted Aug 29, 2026
We are looking for a hands-on Developer – Applications & Data to join a Cape Town-based technology team. The role is suited to someone who is comfortable working across an existing application environment, maintaining and improving live systems, and building new applications as business needs evolve.
This is not a purely greenfield development role. A key part of the position is taking ownership of existing applications, understanding how they work, resolving issues, improving governance and ensuring the environment remains stable and maintainable over time.
- Maintain, support and troubleshoot existing production applications.
- Investigate and resolve application, integration and data issues.
- Build and extend applications based on business requirements.
- Work across TypeScript, JavaScript, React, Node.js and Python.
- Manage deployments, logs, troubleshooting and rollbacks.
- Maintain database and application governance.
- Integrate applications with third-party systems and APIs.
- Maintain and improve technical documentation.
- Work directly with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Take ownership of existing applications and continuously improve their reliability and maintainability.
Requirements
- 3–5 years of commercial software development experience.
- Hands-on development experience across TypeScript, JavaScript, React, Node.js and Python.
- Practical experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, Cursor or GitHub Copilot.
- Strong ability to read, understand, audit and improve code written by others.
- Working knowledge of SQL.
- Understanding of database governance and maintenance, including schemas, migrations, access management, environments and backups.
- Experience managing own deployments, troubleshooting logs and performing rollbacks using platforms such as Railway, AWS or Google Cloud Run.
- Experience taking over and extending an existing codebase.
- Third-party API integration experience.
- Confident using Git within an active development repository.
- Strong documentation skills.
- Able to work independently and take ownership of problems.
- Comfortable maintaining and improving existing applications rather than automatically replacing or rebuilding them.
- Able to communicate technical information clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
- Able to work with commercially sensitive information.
- Must be based in Cape Town or willing to relocate at own arrangement.
- Must be able to work full-time from the Cape Town office – this is not a remote or hybrid role.
- Must have the right to work in South Africa.
Advantageous:
- BigQuery or other cloud data warehouse experience.
- Retail, restaurant, franchise or FMCG experience.
- Point-of-sale or ERP integration experience.
- Sage Intacct experience.
Benefits
- Permanent, full-time employment.
- Opportunity to work across a broad application and data environment.
- Exposure to multiple technologies, integrations and operational systems.
- Opportunity to work on both existing production systems and new application development.
- Direct exposure to business stakeholders and operational technology requirements.
- Package to be discussed based on experience and suitability.
