Bring Your Expertise Across Our Sudbury Operations!

We’re looking for an experienced Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join Magna Mining’s Shared Technical Services team and provide geotechnical expertise across our Sudbury operations.

You’ll work closely with Engineering, Geology, and Operations on ground control, excavation stability, geotechnical risk, and mine design — combining technical expertise with practical solutions that can be applied underground.

We’re looking for someone who understands rock mechanics, knows underground mining, and can turn complex geotechnical challenges into practical recommendations.

All Magna Mining team members are expected to work collaboratively with others, lead the way in health and safety, act with honesty and integrity, and foster an entrepreneurial spirit in pursuit of excellence.

What You’ll Be Doing

You’ll have the opportunity to:
  • Provide geotechnical engineering support to site Engineering teams across all aspects of rock mechanics and excavation stability.
  • Work with long-term and strategic planning teams to establish geotechnical guidelines and incorporate them into life-of-mine plans and studies.
  • Develop internal rock mechanics best practices and support site teams in incorporating them into mine designs.
  • Oversee geotechnical investigation programs, structural geology assessments, and data interpretation.
  • Conduct or coordinate third-party numerical modelling and analysis for new mining areas, extraction techniques, and changing site conditions.
  • Identify, assess, and communicate geotechnical risks and recommend appropriate controls and mitigation measures.
  • Complete regular Critical Control Verifications to ensure as-built conditions align with design and QA/QC systems are functioning as intended.
  • Mentor junior Engineers and promote geotechnical best practices.
  • Work with Safety & Training to ensure ground control training programs are technically accurate and effective.
  • Conduct internal audits of site records and practices to support regulatory compliance and technical due diligence.

Requirements

Who We’re Looking For

You might be a great fit if you:
  • Have a Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Geological Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Are registered or eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
  • Bring 5+ years of geotechnical, rock mechanics, or ground control experience in an underground mining environment.
  • Have experience with underground geotechnical mapping, ground support design, instrumentation, and monitoring — considered an asset.
  • Have experience with geotechnical modelling and mine planning software — considered an asset.
  • Understand rock mechanics, ground control principles, and underground mining methods.
  • Have knowledge of Ontario mining regulations and underground ground control requirements — considered an asset.
  • Bring strong analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Can assess geotechnical risks and develop practical solutions for underground operations.
  • Communicate technical information clearly to both technical and operational teams.
  • Are comfortable working underground and completing regular field inspections.
  • Are organized, collaborative, and committed to safety and continuous improvement.
