Resident Network Engineer – Routing & Platform Testing – freelance – onsite – Middletown, New Jersey, USA

Comgent is seeking a Resident Network Engineer to provide technical expertise across network operations, platform testing and automation. You will act as a primary technical contact, working closely with customer teams on their deployments and use cases. The assignment combines service-provider networking support with hands-on routing, switching and architecture experience.

Responsibilities

• Advise on network design, Junos configuration and operational best practices, developing a detailed understanding of the deployed environment.
  
• Provide primary break/fix support, using advanced diagnostics to restore service and reduce the likelihood of recurring incidents.
  
• Test hardware and software features, certify Junos and Junos EVO behaviour, and develop Python scripts and test automation.
  
• Review designs and project activities against technical standards, using empirical analysis, modelling and testing to validate designs and specifications.
  
• Coordinate with engineering teams and development partners, contribute domain expertise to cross-team projects, and assess new technologies for their practical use.
  
• Document findings and recommendations, present design options to senior stakeholders, and mentor junior colleagues.
  

Requirements

• Relevant experience: 6+ years of experience in data-centre routing, switching and network architecture, including hands-on Juniper QFX, PTX and EX platforms.
  
• JNCIP-level proficiency; Junos/Junos EVO feature and hardware certification; Python test automation; routing, switching and network architecture.
  
• Technology environment: QFX, PTX, EX.
  
• Education: Electrical Engineering / Computer Science bachelor/master, or equivalent.
  
• Use appropriate engineering design tools and software to develop solutions, with practical experience validating product designs and specifications through analysis and testing.
  

Competencies

Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities are required, along with clear English communication and the ability to present architecture proposals and negotiate technical options. JNCIP-level proficiency is expected; this does not make certification itself mandatory.
