An opportunity is available for an Automation Engineer to contribute to the development and delivery of industrial automation projects, covering control-system programming, electrical design, equipment integration and commissioning.

The position involves working with customers and internal technical teams to establish project requirements, develop suitable automation solutions and support their implementation from initial design through to testing and handover. The successful candidate will combine practical engineering capability with structured project delivery, technical problem-solving and a strong focus on quality, safety and customer requirements.

  • Assess project requirements with customers and internal teams, translating operational needs into defined automation and control-system solutions.

  • Develop and adapt PLC software, HMI interfaces and associated control applications for new equipment and modifications to existing systems.

  • Prepare engineering documentation to support design and implementation, including functional, software and hardware specifications, electrical schematics and system records.

  • Develop, review and maintain electrical drawings to reflect equipment design, installation requirements and subsequent modifications.

  • Contribute to equipment specification, selection of automation components, purchasing activities and coordination of technical requirements during the build phase.

  • Investigate control-system faults and equipment performance issues, identifying root causes and implementing appropriate corrective or improvement measures.

  • Support system integration, functional testing, installation, commissioning and handover to customers.

  • Monitor assigned engineering activities against agreed technical requirements, project schedules, cost parameters and quality expectations.

  • Provide technical input to the sales function when assessing customer requirements and developing proposals for automation solutions.

  • Maintain appropriate engineering practices and documentation, ensuring work meets applicable safety, environmental and regulatory requirements.

Requirements

  • Level 8 honours degree in Automation, Control Systems, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant industry experience.

  • Practical experience in industrial automation, including PLC programming and the development or modification of control applications.

  • Experience with HMI and SCADA technologies within an industrial or manufacturing setting.

  • Ability to interpret electrical schematics, engineering drawings, equipment specifications and control-system documentation.

  • Experience supporting engineering projects involving equipment development, integration, testing or commissioning.

  • Strong diagnostic and problem-solving capabilities, with the ability to assess technical issues and implement effective solutions.

  • Confidence communicating technical information to customers, suppliers and colleagues from different engineering disciplines.

  • Effective planning and organisational skills, with the ability to manage assigned tasks and meet project commitments.

  • A collaborative approach, sound technical judgement and an appreciation of cost, quality and delivery considerations.

  • Availability to travel when required for equipment commissioning and customer-site activities.
