Our client, a specialist short-term insurance provider, is seeking a Portfolio Manager / Broker Consultant to manage, support and grow their independent broker portfolio in the Johannesburg region. The role sits at the intersection of sales and relationship management, with the successful candidate responsible for driving profitable premium growth while maintaining underwriting quality and service standards. This is a strong opportunity for a commercially driven insurance professional who enjoys being out in the market and building lasting partnerships.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage, service and grow an allocated portfolio of independent brokers and corporate brokerages within the region
- Achieve and exceed new business and retention targets across core and value-added short-term insurance products
- Schedule, prepare thoroughly for, and conduct regular in-person and virtual broker appointments
- Educate brokers on the company's value proposition, product offering, underwriting appetite and long-term strategy
- Conduct needs assessments to identify portfolio gaps, cross-sell opportunities and new market segments
- Monitor portfolio health, claims experience and loss ratios against regional targets, and take corrective action where required
- Review and screen upcoming renewals, advising on premium adjustments, sums insured and cover restructuring
- Prepare and present portfolio data, performance metrics and market trends in sales and business review meetings
- Ensure all documentation is accurate and complete before handover to the Administration Department
- Proactively communicate changes to underwriting criteria, product terms and regulatory requirements to brokers
- Ensure adherence to Service Level Agreements, corporate identity standards and internal compliance requirements
- Build strong internal working relationships with sales peers, administration, finance and management
- Represent the company professionally in the market and act as a brand ambassador at industry events
- Attend to ad-hoc business, operational and reporting requirements as they arise
Requirements
Matric / Grade 12 (essential)Full short-term insurance qualification (NQF Level 4/5, minimum 120 credits) as required by FAIS
RE5 regulatory examination completed
Minimum 5 years' experience within the South African short-term insurance industry, ideally in a broker consulting, portfolio management or external sales capacity
Proven sales track record with strong negotiation, influencing and closing ability
Confident, warm and engaging communicator with the ability to build trust and credibility quickly at all levels
Excellent written communication skills, particularly professional email and proposal writing
Thorough and well-prepared approach to client engagements, with strong attention to detail
Intermediate to advanced MS Office skills (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint) and comfort with insurance administration systems
Valid driver's licence, own reliable vehicle and willingness to travel within the region
Fully bilingual in English and Afrikaans (advantageous)
