UPS Technician Job Description

This position is responsible for servicing, troubleshooting, installing and maintaining Uninterruptable

Power Supply (UPS) systems from all manufacturers; both single and three phase, along with batteries

and other critical power equipment such as Power Distribution Units (PDU’s) and Static Switches

(SSW’s). This position also provides technical support to customers on operational and maintenance

aspects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • On time arrival to job site.
  • Technician to call in twice per day minimum (9am – 10am and 2pm – 3pm).
  • Technician also required to call in upon arrival and departure from all job sites to confirm

any additional messages or directives (Monday – Friday 8am-5pm).

  • Perform required preventative maintenance service to equipment under contract as scheduled.
  • Responsible for maintenance involving use and care of electrical test equipment.
  • Advise requesting departments regarding system and requirements available to meet their needs

and comply with safety codes.

  • Perform initial starts-ups.
  • Provide 24/7 on-call emergency services as required.
  • Performance of electrical equipment maintenance routines.
  • Battery system maintenance.
  • Installation of designed Battery systems to ensure compliance with design specification and

safety codes.

  • Provide requested services while meeting safety codes, specification and budgetary limitations.
  • Work with other team members to complete custom and large installation projects.
  • Educate customers on basic operation of their equipment, informing them of issues they may

experience and the necessary corrective actions.

  • Establish, promote and maintain excellent rapport with all customers, co-workers, sales

representatives and others as appropriate.

  • Maintain and safeguard company-issued tools and equipment.
  • Troubleshoot critical power systems down to the root cause and perform repairs with minimum

customer downtime or site operation disruption.

  • Interpretation of technical documentation including schematics.
  • Protect company proprietary information, manuals, and records.
  • Coordinate and manage all on-site subcontractors as necessary.
  • Maintain personal vehicle in safe and operational condition and maintain current insurance and a

valid license with current address at all times.

  • Maintain tool bag
  • Maintain PPE kit
  • Recognize sales opportunities for critical power equipment and other add on products and link

potential customers with the appropriate internal and external sales and technical resources.

  • Identify Field Engineers in your network that may become valuable Jantech employees.
  • Timely and accurate completion of paperwork including Field Service Reports, RMA’s, time

cards, and expense reports.

  • Some warehouse responsibilities will be involved which included preparing batteries for

transportation, managing inventory, and operating a fork lift.

  • Maintain technical documentation for study and/or review.
  • Timely completion of additional  training courses.
  • Provide training and guidance to less experienced employees where necessary.
  • Attend product specific training as necessary.
  • Adopt the 102 Mission Statement

Requirements

Job Requirements

Basic Qualifications:

  • Actual experience working on 3-Phase UPS systems a plus.
  • Assignments are moderate to extensively complex in nature, which require judgment, and

initiative in resolving problems and making recommendations.

  • Possess a basic background in industrial and commercial electrical systems.
  • Fundamental understanding of AC/DC theory.
  • A good understanding of sealed and wet celled battery theory and application is a must.
  • Must be thoroughly familiar with Battery Maintenance Procedures.
  • Must be reliable, organized, and professional.
  • Excellent command of the English language (both written and spoken).
  • Mechanical – knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and

maintenance.

  • Must capture and deliver relevant data to home office and to customer via technical reports.
  • Intermediate level of computer skills required. This should include but not limited to Microsoft

Office, PDF Converter Professional and Outlook.

  • Employee must provide a valid driver’s license and be able to secure a rental vehicle, hotel, and

cover meals when traveling.

  • Familiarity with use of electrical test equipment e.g. DVM, Oscilloscopes, Load Banks, etc.

Physical Demands:

  • Employee works on a 24/7 on call basis.
  • Extensive daily driving.
  • Travel is required.
  • Willingness to work rotational shift as necessary, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays

as required.

  • Applicant may be required to stand up to 8 hours or more a day with extensive walking, bending,

and stooping involved.

  • Position requires lifting on a daily basis in the installation and battery removal process, some

which is heavy lifting (up to 75 lbs continuously).

  • Use of hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision,

depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Conditions:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to risk of

electric shock.

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • An Associate’s degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering Technology.
  • Certification or degree in recognized Electronics / Electricity based curriculum, including

Military Schools.

Preferred Education:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering Technology or a highly related field

and a minimum of 2 years of experience servicing, troubleshooting, installing and maintaining

critical power equipment.

  • Factory training or the equivalent in the repair and maintenance of multiple leading UPS brands is

preferred.
