Automation Engineer

This is a remote position.

Maintain Technology is looking for a hands-on AI Orchestrator to design, build and implement intelligent AI-powered workflows that support our business automation and consulting services.

You will play a key role in developing the technology behind our Automation Map methodology — a structured consulting service that helps organisations identify operational inefficiencies, analyse business processes and uncover opportunities for automation.

Working closely with business leadership and the consulting team, you will connect AI models, intelligent agents, automation platforms, APIs and business applications to create integrated, scalable workflows.

This is a practical engineering role. We are looking for someone who can move beyond prompt engineering and AI experimentation to build working solutions that deliver measurable business outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

AI Workflow Development & Orchestration

• Design, build and deploy end-to-end AI-powered workflows.
  

• Connect multiple AI models, agents, APIs and business applications.
  

• Develop multi-step workflows involving information extraction, classification, analysis and document generation.
  

• Build reusable automation components that can support multiple client engagements.
  

• Implement human-in-the-loop validation, error handling and workflow monitoring.
  

AI Agents & Integration

• Develop and orchestrate AI agents for different stages of business processes.
  

• Integrate LLM platforms such as OpenAI, Claude and Gemini through APIs.
  

• Build workflow automations using n8n, Make, Zapier or equivalent platforms.
  

• Develop API integrations, webhooks and structured data exchanges.
  

• Explore agentic AI architectures and multi-agent workflows where appropriate.
  

Intelligent Document Processing & Analysis

• Develop AI-assisted processes for extracting information from questionnaires, documents and discovery notes.
  

• Automate the consolidation and classification of client information.
  

• Identify business processes, operational bottlenecks, manual tasks and potential automation opportunities.
  

• Generate structured discovery outputs and support the preparation of client deliverables.
  

• Implement validation processes to ensure AI-generated outputs are accurate and traceable.
  

Automation Map Development

• Work with Maintain's existing question bank, Python scripts, questionnaires and scheduling workbooks.
  

• Integrate AI capabilities into existing document-generation processes.
  

• Develop workflows that support the end-to-end Automation Map delivery lifecycle.
  

• Assist in automating the analysis and prioritisation of business automation opportunities.
  

• Continuously improve the efficiency, accuracy and scalability of the methodology.
  

Technical Documentation & Continuous Improvement

• Document workflow architectures, integrations and automation logic.
  

• Test, troubleshoot and optimise deployed solutions.
  

• Implement appropriate security, privacy and data-handling controls.
  

• Identify opportunities to improve existing systems and internal processes.
  

Requirements

Required Skills & Experience

• Minimum 4–5 years of relevant professional experience in AI engineering, automation engineering, software development, systems integration or a closely related technical discipline.
  

• Demonstrable experience designing, developing and deploying AI-powered workflows and automation solutions in business environments.
  

• Practical experience integrating Large Language Models (LLMs), including OpenAI, Claude, Gemini or equivalent platforms, into business applications and workflows.
  

• Experience building multi-step automation workflows involving AI models, agents, conditional logic, data processing and system integrations.
  

• Strong understanding of REST APIs, webhooks, JSON and application integrations.
  

• Hands-on experience with automation platforms such as n8n, Make, Zapier or equivalent.
  

• Experience designing structured prompts, AI agents and orchestrated workflows.
  

• Ability to extract, process, classify and structure information from documents and business data.
  

• Proven ability to independently design, build, test, deploy, troubleshoot and maintain technical solutions.
  

• Strong analytical, problem-solving and solution-design capabilities.
  

• Ability to translate business requirements and operational challenges into practical technical solutions.
  

Preferred Skills & Experience

• Python programming and scripting, particularly for data processing, integrations and document generation.
  

• Experience developing multi-agent AI architectures and agentic workflows.
  

• Familiarity with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), vector databases and AI-powered knowledge bases.
  

• Experience integrating AI solutions with CRM, ERP, Microsoft 365, Google Workspace or other enterprise applications.
  

• Experience with automated document processing, extraction and generation.
  

• Understanding of workflow orchestration, monitoring, error handling and human-in-the-loop validation.
  

• Experience working on business process automation, operational improvement or digital transformation projects.
  

• Experience deploying and maintaining AI solutions in production environments.
  

Experience Expectations

Candidates must have at least 4–5 years of relevant professional engineering, software development, systems integration or automation experience.

They must also demonstrate practical experience implementing AI/LLM-powered solutions. The 4–5 years does not need to be exclusively in generative AI, provided the candidate can demonstrate relevant hands-on AI implementation capability.

Important: We are looking for an experienced technical builder who can design, integrate and deploy practical AI-powered solutions—not someone whose experience is limited to using AI tools, writing prompts or experimenting with generative AI.
