Black & Grey HR is seeking a Port Engineer (Technical Superintendent) – Electronics & Systems to join our client's marine operations team based in Abu Dhabi, UAE. This is a permanent, office-based role with regular vessel and yard attendance as required, providing technical ownership and certification of navigation, communication, automation, and electronic control systems across a mixed fleet and unmanned surface vessels (USVs).
You will be responsible for maintaining the reliability, certification, and cyber readiness of ECDIS, GMDSS, DP/USV control, and related electronic systems, while leading troubleshooting, upgrades, and comms compliance. Working closely with the Marine Manager, Port Captain, Projects and ROC/Survey teams, OEMs, integrators, and Class/Flag authorities, you will ensure fleet-wide electronic system readiness and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain certification and operability of navigation, communication, and automation systems, ensuring zero critical failures and 100% certification currency.
- Diagnose and resolve electronic faults across the fleet, managing spares, firmware, and version control to meet MTTR and compliance targets.
- Plan and lead upgrades and retrofits (e.g., ECDIS, DP/USV control), ensuring cyber readiness and on-time, on-budget project delivery.
- Support USV deployments, including communication links, sensors, control systems, and redundancy, to meet mission success and comms uptime targets.
- Maintain accurate technical records, configurations, and drawings, ensuring 100% accuracy and rapid retrieval.
- Interface with Projects to define electronic scope and readiness, ensuring first-time-right project acceptance.
- Manage relationships with electronics service partners, integrators, and OEMs, including SLA and warranty coordination.
- Supervise riding electricians and contractors, ensuring work is completed safely and to required quality standards.
- Coordinate with Class Societies and Flag State authorities on system approvals and surveys.
- Recommend vendor selection, technology roadmap direction, and inventory levels to support fleet electronic reliability.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree (B.Eng.) in Electronics, Automation, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent.
- 7–10 years of experience in marine electronics (GMDSS/ECDIS/radar/automation), with prior superintendent-level exposure.
- Strong technical knowledge of navigation, communication, and automation systems, including configuration/version control and diagnostics.
- Experience with DP systems and/or DP/USV control systems is highly advantageous.
- Familiarity with Planned Maintenance Systems (PMS)/CMMS, firmware, and configuration management.
- Strong analytical skills, documentation rigor, and vendor management capability.
- Working knowledge of IMO (SOLAS/MARPOL/ISM/ISPS), Flag State & Class rules, and STCW requirements; IMCA familiarity is a plus for offshore operations.
- Experience coordinating with OEMs, system integrators, Class Societies, and Flag State authorities.
