Refrigeration Trainee

Summary

As a Refrigeration Technician Trainee, this role is a trainee learning the skills and techniques of refrigeration maintenance and repair within a processing plant. This role assists experienced technicians, practice refrigeration techniques, and gain hands-on experience in a refrigeration environment. Refrigeration Technician Trainees typically participate in a formal apprenticeship or training program that combines on-the-job training with classroom instruction.

Essential Functions/Qualifications

The responsibilities of the position include the following:

• Housekeeping of refrigeration machinery rooms.
  

• Assist in the plants proper operations by monitoring and testing the various systems.
  

• Will assist in the operation and maintenance of the Ammonia System to meet the requirements of plant production as well as State and Federal regulations.
  

• Assist in performing all preventative maintenance to the system, including draining the oil pots, oil and filter changes, annual rebuilds of compressors and valves, motor changes, and condenser/evaporator as required.
  

• Learns to maintain an accurate log documenting all maintenance and inspection activity in accordance with our Mechanical Integrity Program and PSM requirements.
  

• Learns how to work in a safe manner consistent with all company rules and good work practices.
  

• Exposure to heat, cold, moisture and high noise levels will be common.
  

• Permissible levels of ammonia can be encountered.
  

• Other duties as assigned to ensure the facility and organization is fully supported and successful.

Requirements

Education and Experience

• High School Diploma/GED or equivalent is preferred.
  

• Must be willing to obtain OSHA HAZMAT 24-hour training, this includes passing a medical evaluation and fit test for a full-face respirator.
  

• Have knowledge of email, spreadsheet software, word processing software and presentation software.
  

• Able to read and understand documents such as safety rules, procedure, operating manuals and maintenance instructions.
  

Work Environment and Schedule

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and extreme cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Position requires onsite presence at one of our Alaska processing facilities, and the ability to travel, including at times in remote locations.

Physical Demands

The Chief Engineer must be capable of working consecutive, long and variable work shifts for extended periods of time. Shifts typically range from 12 to 16 hours per day with periodic breaks depending on work demands. The work is strenuous and sometimes hazardous due to exposure to operating machinery, mechanical parts, fumes, chemicals, pressurized fluids, vibration and with the vessel operating under all types of weather including extreme cold. This means standing, walking and maintaining balance in rough seas or other types of weather.

Both hands must be capable of grabbing, holding or gripping rope, rails, equipment and vessel structures for frequent periods of time. Forceful grasping along with repetitive finger and hand use is occasional.

Applicants must be able to climb up and down, safely ascend and descend ladders, work in small and confined spaces, and pass all safety test requirements.

Physical Demands
While performing the essential functions and job duties associated with the job, the employee is regularly required to sit, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk; reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
