Senior Software Engineer, Merchant APIs (Remote)

$175K–$200K base + equity

A fast-growing, venture-backed Series A startup is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to build and own the merchant-facing APIs at the core of its payments and integrations platform. The company partners with major national consumer brands and integrates directly into their checkout flows, so the APIs you build will power onboarding and transaction processing for household-name merchants.

This is a backend-heavy, full-stack role for a high-slope senior engineer who thrives with autonomy, ships quickly, and wants to own features end to end.

What you'll do

• Design, build, and own merchant-facing APIs, including disputes, reconciliation, and catalog APIs, that partner brands rely on to process transactions
  
• Optimize database queries and backend performance in a Python/Django monolith to support rapid merchant onboarding
  
• Build and iterate on the merchant dashboard, consuming your own public APIs as their first customer
  
• Partner with product and go-to-market teams to expand the API as the company enters new merchant categories and adds new product and cart eligibility requirements
  
• Use AI tools like Claude to accelerate development and ship at startup pace
  

Requirements

What we're looking for

• 3–8 years of software engineering experience, with a focus on API design and merchant or partner integrations
  
• Strong Python and Django skills, plus comfort working across the stack
  
• Experience designing APIs that external partners depend on, and evolving them without breaking existing consumers
  
• A bias toward ownership, speed, and autonomy
  

Tech stack: Python, Django, Next.js, React, TypeScript, Datadog
