We are urgently seeking an Senior Occupational Therapist  for a hospital located in Westmeath, Ireland.

Responsibilities

  • Provide specialist occupational therapy assessment and intervention for patients with complex rehabilitation, functional and discharge planning needs, including assessment of ADLs, cognition, psychosocial factors and environmental requirements.

  • Conduct comprehensive functional and cognitive assessments using appropriate validated tools, apply advanced clinical reasoning, establish patient-centred goals and develop, implement and review individualised rehabilitation programmes.

  • Assess and support patients in activities of daily living, including washing, dressing, toileting, feeding and domestic tasks, promoting independence, confidence, safety and participation through appropriate rehabilitation and compensatory strategies.

  • Assess functional transfers, mobility and safety, providing guidance on moving and handling, falls prevention, positioning, hoists, slings, transfer aids and other adaptive equipment in collaboration with Physiotherapy, Nursing and MDT colleagues.

  • Complete seating, posture, positioning and environmental assessments, recommending suitable wheelchairs, specialist seating, pressure management equipment and home adaptations to facilitate safe and timely discharge.

  • Carry out kitchen and domestic functional assessments, providing training in adaptive techniques, energy conservation, assistive technology and safe completion of household activities to support independent living.

  • Act as a senior occupational therapy representative within the multidisciplinary team, contributing to complex case reviews, discharge planning and clinical decision-making while coordinating effectively with hospital, primary care, community and external services.

  • Maintain high standards of clinical governance and professional practice by complying with CORU requirements, hospital policies and evidence-based standards, while maintaining accurate documentation and participating in clinical audit, risk management and quality improvement initiatives.

  • Contribute to the development and improvement of occupational therapy and rehabilitation services, including reviewing clinical pathways, policies, procedures, documentation standards and service delivery, while supporting patient safety, dignity and confidentiality.

  • Provide clinical supervision, education and guidance to junior staff, students and MDT colleagues, support safe use of equipment and rehabilitation techniques, and maintain professional competence through ongoing CPD, supervision and relevant training.



Requirements

  • Hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy and maintain current registration with CORU.

  • Have a minimum of 3 years’ post-qualification occupational therapy experience, preferably in rehabilitation, acute care, older persons, neurology, step-down or community services.

  • Demonstrate advanced clinical assessment, reasoning and decision-making skills, with experience managing complex functional assessments, rehabilitation needs and discharge planning.

  • Have strong knowledge of discharge planning pathways, community services and equipment provision, with practical experience in seating, environmental assessment, adaptive equipment and functional rehabilitation.

  • Demonstrate the ability to develop and deliver evidence-based, patient-centred interventions that promote independence, safety, participation and positive clinical outcomes.

  • Demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective relationships and communicate complex clinical information clearly with patients, families, carers and healthcare professionals.

  • Demonstrate effective multidisciplinary teamwork, working collaboratively with hospital teams, community services and external agencies to achieve coordinated rehabilitation and discharge goals.

  • Demonstrate strong organisation and caseload management skills, including effective prioritisation, time management, clinical documentation and the ability to respond appropriately to changing service demands.

  • Demonstrate leadership and professional practice, including the ability to support, supervise or mentor junior staff and students, promote best practice and contribute to the development of occupational therapy services.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of clinical governance, audit, quality improvement and evidence-based practice, with a commitment to continuous professional development, research, lifelong learning and maintaining professional competence.
